MADE IN USA! These solid brass sleigh bells were cast by Pennsylvania maker William "Bill" R. Schall. The strap is made of vintage harness leather.
Bill Schall (b 1942, d 2010) produced a line of high-quality sleigh bells from the 1970s through the 2000s. He patented his method of casting sleigh bells in 1982. His bells have the same ruddy golden color and shape as antique bells from the late 1800s. These features and the bells' USA origin makes them unique among modern sleigh bells.
Many of Bill's larger bells are marked with his distinctive sleigh created from his initials BRS. The #14 bell on this strap carries his mark. (Click "See more images.")
We purchased this one-of-a-kind strap from an estate. We are selling the strap in as-is condition after a bit of tidying and minor fixing up.
This bell strap has bells ranging from a #7 (1 7/8") to a #14 (2 3/4") in an irregular sequence. There are multiple #7, #8 (2"), and #9 (2 1/8") bells on the ends of the strap. The five larger bells sized from #10 (2 1/4") to #14 are sandwiched in the middle.
The bells have been wiped clean of dust and loose grime, but they have not been polished. They have a moderate amount of oxidation and discoloration. You could polish the bells by hand to a bright shine with some elbow grease and a good brass polish. More about polishing bells...
This strap is about 68" long and 1 1/2" wide. The leather was harvested from a vintage harness, so this repurposed strap will have stitching holes, worn edges, surface wear, and other evidence of its previous life.
The leather is pliable and slightly oily. It has been wiped clean of dust and loose surface grime. The strap has a buckle, so the strap can be fastened into a circle. This strap is unlined -- it is made from a single layer of leather.
This item is a vintage item suitable for decorative purposes only. Do not use this strap on a horse or for any other application where strength, safety, and durability are requirements.
