We purchased this one-of-a-kind strap from an estate. We are selling the strap in as-is condition.
The solid brass sleigh bells are vintage, meaning they were made sometime between the mid 1900s through recent years. They range in size from #1 (1 1/8") bells at the ends to a #15 (2 7/8") in the center. The bells increase in diameter by 1/8" as you go from the #1 bell at one end of the strap to the center #15. The bells decrease in size the same way from the #15 bell to the #1 bell at the other end.
Two of the bells near the center of the strap have holes through the top half (click "See more images" and view photos #5, 6, and 7). This is an unusual design detail, not a defect.
The bells have been wiped clean of dust and loose grime, but they have not been polished. They have a light amount of oxidation with some spots of darker discoloration. You could polish the bells by hand to a bright shine with some elbow grease and a good brass polish. More about polishing bells...
The strap is made of heavy harness leather in vintage, lightly-used condition. The color is mostly black with some fading to brown where the strap was exposed to sun. This gives this strap a more aged, rustic appearance. (Click "See more images" and view photos #1, 6, 10, 14, and 15).
The leather is pliable and strong, and would be safe for use on a horse. The piece is fully lined with a separate strap of leather on the back. "Keeper loops" hold the bell strap and lining strap together.
This strap is about 89 1/2" long and 1 1/2" wide and weighs about 11 pounds.
