This vintage neck strap with antique sleigh bells is offered in the same used condition as we received it. Please click on "See more images" to see larger photos of the strap and the bells.
The solid brass sleigh bells on this strap are probably European bells made sometime between the mid 1800s through the early 1900s. There are two larger bells, one marked with a size "8" and one with a "9". Both are about 1 3/8" diameter. The remaining bells are marked with a "7" and are all about 1 1/4" across.
The bell strap was nicely made by an experienced harness maker with a full leather lining on the back and a light padding, probably curled animal hair, inserted between the bell strap and lining strap.
The padding is enclosed by lines of hand stitching along both long edges of the straps using flax (linen) thread. There are some areas where the stitching is worn or missing due to age and use, but the remaining stitching is still holding the lining and bell straps together.
The buckle is nicely hand stitched in place and there is an intact leather "keeper" next to the buckle. The brownish-black strap is about 38" long and 1 1/2" wide.
We have only wiped the bells and strap clean of loose grime and dust; we have made no other changes or repairs.
