Keeper loop strap with 38 small bells

This handsome strap features 38 small petal bells from the late 1800s or early 1900s. All bells are in the #1 (1 1/8" diameter) and #2 (1 1/4") size range.

The owner asked us to make a new strap close to the original, so we honored the original strap width (1 1/4") and overall length, the spacing of the bells along the strap, and the original maker's traditional way of stitching the buckle and the lining strap in place. The original steel buckle was not reusable, so we installed a new brass buckle identical to the original.

"Keeper loops" are slipped between each pair of bells on this style of strap to hold the bell strap and its lining strap together. We used brass fasteners to form the new keepers, rather than hand stitch them as was done on the original strap. This one change from the original design was done as a cost saving measure.
