This odd little item is a "hip strap" for a horse harness. The original hip strap had been damaged and was unsafe to use. The owner asked me to make a replacement that matched the original.
The black bridle leather strap is about 4" wide, maximum, and 19" long. Typical hip straps for a buggy harness are quite a bit simpler than this one, with its curvy shape, "doubled and stitched" construction, and hand stitched keepers.
I reused the original buckle on the new piece to ensure it would match the old harness as closely as possible, but the leather in the replacement strap is all ne.
While the cost to make this piece was higher than the cost to make a typical hip strap, the owner is happy that the replacement blends well with his original harness.
