The 17 "round ridge" bells on this strap are #3 size (1 3/8" diameter). They were made in the late 1800s to early 1900s. The owner likes the look of her bells as they are, so I lightly hand cleaned the bells just to remove dust and loose grime but otherwise left them as-is.
The dark brown, unlined strap is just under 53" long and 1 1/2" wide. I made the new strap wider than the original 7/8" strap because the owner wants to buckle the strap into a circle and hang it on a door. The wider strap will keep the metal bells from banging and rubbing on the door as the door is opened and closed.
The ends of the strap are narrowed to fit a 7/8" wide brass buckle. The use of rivets at the ends is a construction detail copied from the original strap. I darkened all of the hardware -- buckle, rivets, and screws -- to blend with the dark color of the bells.
